The gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica) of tropical Africa probably has the highest average yield of venom (350 - 600mg - 0.012 - 0.021oz); only 60mg (0.0002oz) of gaboon viper venom is enough to kill a fully grown man. However, the highest yield ever recorded was 1530mg (0.054oz) dry weight from a jararacussi (Bothrops jararacussi), which lives in southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina; this was clearly exceptional, since the average yield for this species is 150 - 200mg (0.005 - 0.007oz). |
